CASA PALMA

A quiet Florida retreat, brought to life through material, craft, and a designer who knew exactly how she wanted people to feel.

The Brief

The designer behind Casa Palma wanted guests to feel like they had discovered a beautiful Florida home, not checked into another hotel.

The rooms would be warm and easy. Plaster walls, natural stone, soft fabrics, good light, and materials that would become more beautiful with age.

Most importantly, she didn't want the furniture to feel added afterward.

It needed to belong.

The Challenge

The designer was looking for pieces that could become part of the architecture. The arrival space needed something with enough weight to hold a large room. The courtyard called for a table that could become a natural gathering place. In the guest rooms, the furniture needed to get quieter.

Each space asked for something different, but the property still needed to read as one thought. Durability had to live underneath the design, not become the design.

The Vision

The designer gave us the following language:

  • Warm wood.

  • Heavy forms.

  • Natural texture.

  • Quiet details.

Instead of treating every room as a separate project, she wanted the property to feel connected from the moment a guest arrived until they closed the door to their room at night.

The Design

We worked through dimensions, sketches, proportions, and materials together.

  • A large arrival table needed enough presence for the lobby.

  • A courtyard table needed to feel relaxed enough for morning coffee and beautiful enough for dinner.

  • Guest room pieces needed to do their job without asking for too much attention.

As the designs developed, we kept putting them back against her original vision. The goal was never to put our style into Casa Palma.

It was to make her style clearer.

THE MATERIAL

Once the forms were right, we turned to the wood. The designer had already created a beautiful mix of stone, plaster, fabric, and natural color. The wood needed to live comfortably beside all of it.

So, we looked beyond species, stain and individual boards. Some had dramatic grain that could hold its own in the larger public spaces. Others were quieter and better suited for the guest rooms.

We laid them out, moved them around, and considered where each one would eventually live.

The Making

Once she approved the direction, the drawings started becoming real furniture. As pieces came together in the shop, we shared progress, worked through details, and made adjustments when something looked different at full scale than it did on paper.

Sometimes a beautiful piece of wood changed the plan, or a proportion needed another inch. The design continued to grow while we built it. Her vision stayed the same.

THE DETAILS

The designer wanted Casa Palma to feel special without explaining why it was special. For us, that translated to grain could continue across cabinet doors instead of being broken apart and hardware could disappear.

Colors had to work with everything she had already selected, especially the Florida light. Samples went back and forth until the wood felt like it belonged beside those materials.

The final finish protected the furniture without hiding what made the wood beautiful in the first place. The designer got the warmth she had imagined from the beginning.

The Installation

The arrival table found its place beneath the lobby lighting.

The courtyard table settled into the outdoor space.

Credenzas, benches, consoles, and smaller pieces moved into their rooms.

Suddenly, things we had been looking at individually for weeks could be seen as she had always seen them:

Together.

We made the final adjustments, stepped away, and let the rooms take over.

That was the point.
